Real Estate is Not a Job - It's a Lifestyle

In today's Agent Insights - Chris Ann Cleland, a Real Estate Agent at Long & Foster REALTORS in Virginia, talks about how her real estate career goes far beyond a day job - it impacts her whole lifestyle.

Here's Chris:

When I got my real estate license in 2005, I don't think I had any idea I would be where I am today.

Sure, I had plans to sell lots of houses and represent my clients to the fullest, getting lots of referrals in the process (and all that has happened). And yes, I earn more money than I ever thought I would - but there is something else that goes on when you become a successful real estate agent.

For starters, you are not just a real estate agent, you are a business owner. Most new agents don't think of themselves that way, but it's true!  Selling houses is a part of that business, but generating new business and having great referral partners that make you look good are also critical to that business success.

As business owners in real estate, agents have the opportunity to be leaders in our community. Whether we're outwardly seeking community leadership or not, it's a role we play. We know what's happening in our communities and can motivate groups of people for causes through our strong networking.

And there's one other thing we do as business owners....we help other business owners succeed. This hit home with me when I met with vendors that I recommend for basic home improvements. I recommend them because they do great work for a reasonable price and ALWAYS put my clients first. Little did I know that the business I had been referring them helped them through some of the roughest years they had faced. Well isn't that something - the best years I've had are directly linked to them prepping my listings for sale.

Yes, this business has many different of levels of giving back. Helping others succeed in their complimentary businesses is just a small part of it, but it sure does make you feel good to know you've had such a positive impact on someone.

Real estate is a career, a lifestyle and a means of helping your community. That is what makes this business so rewarding.
