Real Estate Tools: The Power of a Positive Mindset

As an agent, you’re constantly trying new strategies to help you drum up new business, nurture existing business and drive referral business. It all starts with a basic marketing strategy - right?

Wrong.

There are lots of real estate tools you can use - but in truth - it starts with your mindset. All too often, we forget how much impact a positive or negative mindset can have on our day-to-day outcomes. As the great Oprah Winfrey once said, “The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.”

This can be especially true when it comes to real estate – because so much of what you need to do to be successful has to come from a place of personal drive and ambition. You need to walk into a listing presentation with high energy and leave your prospects saying WOW.

So what are the best ways to start your day with a fantastic mindset or overcome a not-so-great situation to turn your day around?

4 tips to make a positive mindset a habit:

  1. Take ownership of your attitude

It’s ridiculously easy to blame a bad mood on something or someone else… but ultimately, only you can decide how you’re going to react to it (even in the cutthroat real estate industry). No one else should have the right to knock you off your game. Take ownership of your mindset and you’ll find that it’s a great first step in learning how to make all of your days positive days.

  2. Identify positive and negative patterns…

…and write them down! You don’t have to keep a full-blown diary, but you should make a point to jot down a few notes throughout each day on how you’re feeling. You’ll start to notice trends on what puts you in a bad mood (for me, traffic and being sleepy) and what puts you in a great mood (good music and great coworkers). This will help you to adjust things in your favor. As an added bonus, by identifying the things that make you happy, you’ll start to feel more gratitude!

  1. Suck it up buttercup

Sometimes you’re tired, you don’t feel well… you’re just not having a great day - but how you feel is not your client’s problem. In fact, they don’t even need to know that you’re not feeling 100%. Days like this are great days to put your acting skills to the test. Paste a smile on your face, have an extra cup of coffee and power through. Do a perspective check – could it be worse? (99.99% chance the answer is yes). Consider what would be worse and re-frame your mindset on whatever is frustrating you. By the end of the day, you’ll be super glad you did.

  2. Consider the colors of the rainbow

Most situations are not black and white. But when you’re feeling frustrated, it’s really easy to fall into what I like to call the ‘grumpy landslide’. If you immediately jump to the most negative possible outcome – the blackest black, you’re going to miss the other colors. Be sure to think each situation through completely before assuming the worst. And if it does end up being the worst? See tip 3.

If today is one of those negative days for you – sit at your desk right now and smile for 30 seconds. You may feel a bit foolish doing so – and if someone walks by, you may get a double (or even a triple)-take – but for some magical reason, you’ll feel better. (Don’t believe me? Try it!)
