Face Your Fear of Rejection

As a real estate agent you are used to hearing the word ‘No’. You can’t escape rejection.  But you can let it go. Fear of rejection is not a helpful emotion in business as it’s not personal. Have confidence in your approach to business and your industry expertise. View every rejection as an opportunity and not as an attack on your personal character.

Real Estate Agents: Face Your Fears!

Here are 5 steps to overcome your fear of rejection:

  1. Be mindful of your thoughts.

When faced with a challenge, do you tell yourself “I’m no good. This is way too hard. I’m going to fail.”?  Don’t let negative self-talk sabotage your attitude. What do you fear?  What might go wrong?  Who has the power to reject you?  Why would that person say ‘No’? Come up with answers to all those questions. By being prepared you can address them effectively while maintaining your composure.
  2. Change your mindset.

Think of every ‘No’ as a stepping stone to a ‘Yes’. If you don't ask you are already rejected. If you are already rejected then the worst that can happen is they confirm their rejection. The best that can happen to you is that you get a ‘Yes’. If you don’t keep reaching out and asking, you won’t know how many ‘Yes’s’ you can get.
  1. Focus on the moment.

Stay in the present. Rejections are temporary. You can move to the next opportunity. Usually fear of rejection stems from the desire for approval from other people.  Don’t base your self-esteem on other people’s opinions. Know yourself and what you’re capable of. People can sense confidence. Now is what matters – keep hustling.
  2. Keep business goals in mind.

“Eyes on the prize”. Keep in mind what you plan to achieve with your profits. Whether you wish to add more people to your team, expand to other locations or invest into a new CRM, these goals should push you and inspire you any time you fear rejection. You should be prepared to fight all odds to meet your goals even when it means talking to a lot of skeptical prospective clients. You get ‘Yes’s’ when you least expect it - keep on moving.
  3. Analyze client feedback.

Why did a prospective client say ‘No’? Did you listen, ask the right questions and get to the underlying reason? It's important to analyze feedback your customers give you and make necessary changes to keep evolving and improving. Network with like-minded people who share your ambition and your business goals to get feedback on what improvements you should make. Crowdsource your business to stay ahead.

Fear of rejection can be powerful and debilitating. Knowing how to handle it in business and in life and be prepared for it will empower you to evolve and grow your business.
